How do you get your start in sports?
"I started getting into sports while I was in University. I was at a point where I knew I no longer wanted to study neuroscience and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I began taking elective courses in Sport Management and immediately knew this is what I wanted to pursue. I spoke with an advisor about switching my major and began searching for opportunities where I could gain experience. One of my professors was also a coach so I reached out one day asking if they needed any assistance during the season. They did not however, they knew of a colleague who did and I began a position as a Research Assistant and Social Media Manager for Varsity sports. At the same time, my local stadium was hiring for part-time positions working game days so I applied there as well, as I saw this as a great opportunity for networking. This is what ultimately kickstarted my career."
How do you handle admin & media for Sports Girls Club & PWHL Ottawa?
"I work in media for Sports Girls Club at PWHL Ottawa home games. Before each game, I brainstorm content that I would like to capture at the game and pay attention as to what is currently trending on social media. I also come up with interview questions to ask fans and the players at the press conference after the game. While at the game, I pay attention to key stories and plays that can be posted on social media and take notes as well to write articles for the website.
I also work as an admin for CARHA Hockey. I manage about 200 recreational hockey leagues throughout Canada helping them with insurance, tournaments, and whatever they may need during the season."
What are some sports events that you have worked at?
"I have worked the CARHA Hockey World Cup, PWHL Ottawa, Gotham FC but I am hoping to add a lot more events under my belt in 2024."
If you could work for any team, what would it be?
"The Boston Celtics!!! As a Canadian, it would be a dream to get a Visa and move to Boston. "
What is your biggest piece of advice for women that are getting started in the industry?
"Although it is still a very male dominated industry, do not let this intimidate you! The women in the sports community are so kind and generous and they make everything worth it. I have met some of my best friends in this industry and it’s important not to view others as competition. There is room for everyone! Making connections is key but try not to view connections as simply transactional. Meaningful connections will take you much further in life. Imposter syndrome is also something that a lot of women deal with in this industry (including myself) but remember that you are there for a reason and you are just as worthy as everyone else in the room. "
What is your #1 goal while working in sports?
"Inspire as many young girls as possible to follow their dreams, even if it seems scary. If you can see her, you can be her!"
What was your dream job while you were in college before getting into sports?
"A concussion specialist. I wanted to be like Will Smith in the movie Concussion and study CTE. "
